This monograph series is intended to provide HIV specialists with a practical guide to the use of antiretroviral therapy in adult patients. The series addresses major elements of the clinical care of HIV-infected adults, with a focus on current guideline recommendations for optimizing patient outcomes. Each monograph provides a review of the available literature in the context of one or more clinical cases.
Part 3: Managing the Treatment-Experienced Patient
Effective use of highly active antiretroviral therapy has allowed for dramatic improvement in the duration and quality of life for persons living with HIV infection. Unfortunately, drug-resistant virus may emerge if full virologic suppression is not achieved. This monograph addresses the evaluation and management of antiretroviral-experienced patients with treatment failure and examines the potential role and optimal use of newly available therapies.
